For over one hundred years, the Salt Lake Temple has stood as a visual symbol and a monument to its people and still figures prominently in the lives of the faithful of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Generation after generation, it stands in granite as a monument of Brigham Young's vision and the great sacrifice of those whose faith brought the Temple to its completion. For forty years, from 1853 to 1893, the Temple was under construction under the watchful eye of three Church presidents, Brigham Young, John Taylor, and Wilford Woodruff. Because the Salt Lake Temple functioned strictly as a sacred space, the Temple played a vital role in the community. Its sacred nature and geographical location were central to the Mormon doctrine of gathering. The Church's removal to the Great Basin region was seen as fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy that the Lord would be "established in the tops of the mountains".

Of special interest are reproductions from the original glass plates taken of the interior by C.R. Savage, circa 1911. These photos, stored in the Church Archives for more than 80 years, were published in their entire sequence for the first time in this volume, including rare pictures of the Holy of Holies.
